Generare resistenza culturale, questo è il motto del Freedom Theatre, un progetto fondato nel 2006 nel campo profughi della città di Jenin, in Palestina, per offrire, attraverso l’arte e la cultura, un’alternativa alle giovani generazioni che vivono sotto l’occupazione militare israeliana.
Il Freedom Theatre trae la sua ispirazione dal Teatro delle Pietre, The Stone Theatre, un progetto nato a Jenin durante la prima Intifada grazie all’impegno di Arna Mer Khamis, un’israeliana che scelse di vivere tra i palestinesi dedicando i propri sforzi alla battaglia in difesa del diritto alla libertà e all’educazione dei bambini attraverso l’espressione artistica.
Tra i resti delle macerie del campo e del suo precedente teatro il Freedom Theatre è divenuto presto un faro di luce e di creatività. Tre uomini di diversa estrazione sono stati le forze trainanti della sua fondazione: Juliano Mer Khamis, un attore israelo-palestinese, Zakaria Zubeidi, un combattente per la libertà palestinese, e Jonatan Stanczak, un infermiere pediatrico svedese.
Arte come resistenza, teatro come terapia, spazio scenico come luogo in cui convogliare i sentimenti contrastanti, la paura e il dolore. Il teatro diviene luogo d’incontro, di confronto e di creazione, ma anche momento di crescita personale.
Il Freedom Theatre propone dunque una nuova forma di resistenza: i continuatori dell’opera del direttore Juliano, in seguito al suo omicidio prematuro e irrisolto, mostrano la volontà di incidere su ogni età, di formare persone in grado si sviluppare una coscienza critica e che siano capaci di costruire una società fondata sull’uguaglianza, sul riconoscimento e sulla tutela dei diritti civili e politici.
Il percorso offerto dal Freedom Theatre segue una linea educativa e formativa, infatti, i ragazzi del campo di Jenin, oltre alla messa in scena di produzioni teatrali, svolgono molte altre attività: informatica, scrittura creativa, fotografia, cinematografia, terapia teatrale.
Il teatro rappresenta un luogo sicuro dove le persone possono sognare e pensare liberamente, dove possono sentirsi uguali, dove possono cooperare e mettersi alla prova.
Per le giovani generazioni palestinesi l’espressione artistica rappresenta non solo un potente strumento di liberazione ma è diventata parte integrante della loro vita per la ricerca di giustizia, uguaglianza e libertà.
Ancora una volta a essere centrale è il ruolo dell’arte ed il suo messaggio di spinta al cambiamento.
L’arte, infatti, intende trasformare la realtà, stimolare il pensiero critico operando nel concreto, salvando coloro che sono rimasti orfani e coloro che ritengono l’espressione artistica una chiave diretta per l’emancipazione.
Un’arte strumentale e funzionale, una forma di denuncia pacifica e di resistenza culturale per decostruire e rendere comprensibile una realtà oppressiva, per continuare a sognare e creare cambiamenti insieme.
Le parole di Juliano continuano a vivere come continua a brillare la luce di speranza che sprigiona il Freedom Theatre: «Il mio sogno è che il Freedom Theatre diventi la forza maggiore, cooperando con gli altri nel generare una resistenza culturale, portando sulle sue spalle valori universali di libertà e di giustizia.»

Generating cultural resistance, this is the motto of the Freedom Theatre, a project founded in 2006 in the refugee camp in the city of Jenin, Palestine, to offer, through art and culture, an alternative to the younger generation living under Israeli military occupation.
The Freedom Theatre draws its inspiration from The Stone Theatre, another project born in Jenin during the first Intifada thanks to the commitment of Arna Mer Khamis, an Israeli woman who chose to live among the Palestinians devoting their efforts to the battle in defence of the right to freedom and education of children through artistic expression.
Among the remains of the camp and its former theatre, the Freedom Theatre soon became a beacon of light and creativity. Three men of different extractions were the leads of its foundation: Juliano Mer Khamis, an Israeli-Palestinian actor, Zakaria Zubeidi, a fighter for the Palestinian freedom, and Jonatan Stanczak, a Swedish paediatric nurse.
Art as resistance, theatre as therapy, scenic space as a place to convey feelings, fear and pain. Theatre becomes a meeting place for confrontation and creation, but also a moment of personal growth.
The Freedom Theatre proposes a new form of resistance: the followers of Juliano’s work – the director’s work – right after his untimely and unsolved murder, show a willingness to get young people involved, to train people who can develop a critical consciousness and who are able to build a society based on equality, recognition and the protection of civil and political rights.
The path offered by the Freedom Theatre follows an educational line: in fact, the children of the Jenin’s camp, in addition to staging theatrical productions, perform many other activities: computer science, writing photography, cinematography, theatre therapy.
A theatre is a safe place where people can dream and think freely, where they can feel equals and cooperate and test themselves.
For the younger Palestinian generation, artistic expression is not only a powerful mean for liberation but has become an essential part of their lives in the search for justice, equality and freedom.
Once again, the role of art and its impulse for change are fundamental.
Art, in fact, aims to transform reality, stimulate critical thinking by working effectively, saving those who have been orphaned and those who consider artistic expression a direct key to emancipation.
An instrumental and functional art, a form of peaceful denunciation and cultural resistance to deconstruct and make an oppressive reality understandable, to continue to dream and create change together.
Juliano’s words continue to live as the light of hope that emanates from the Freedom Theatre: «My dream is for the Freedom Theatre to become the greatest force, cooperating with others in generating cultural resistance, carrying on its shoulders universal values of freedom and justice.»
